Chapter 2: Drawing and Writing Book... plus My Crayons Talk...

Two Words: HOLY CRUD! I am in love with this chapter. The lessons, the modeling, the dialogue.. Can it be August so I can teach writing? Wait. Did I just say that? I never thought that I'd love to teach writing or look forward to it. But this book (in only 2 chapters) has made me do that!!

There are so many great things about this awesome, awesome chapter! I really love the very first lesson that they give where they introduce the drawing and writing books. Its just the best lesson to follow. I plan on using it when I start with my new group of littles in the fall. PLUS I will be making sure to create an anchor chart at the beginning of the year as we tell stories so we have a list of topics that we can write and draw about through out the year. The past two years it's been something as a refresher lesson that I've done in the middle of the year. (Mental note: check!)

The other day I posted about going to the library with my littles. One of my favorite choices... one of the random grabs off the shelf as I passed by ;).... was one this cute little colors book called My Crayons Talk by Patricia Hubbard. Adorable!

Instructional Uses: Colors, Rhyming, Creative Writing

On each page there is an adorable and quick poem that would be perfect for having students pick out each set of rhyming words (i.e. gum-yum, play-day). They are straight forward rhymes which I love! Last year I found really great (And adorable) resources on the web but they used words that my students were not familiar with like yam. What Kindergartener knows yam?

Freebie time:

I plan on using this book as a challenge to my students to draw and tell a story using only 1 color. Now, I had a student last year that used 1 color all year.. drove me nuts! After training my students to do a great job with details, this will be an activity for several months into the school year. Click the picture to grab this excellent freebie.

How great?! I would love it to leave a comment if you grab the freebie. It totally makes my day if I get a comment or two!

  1. I love that book! Thanks for the great ideas to use with it. I used to have a cassette tape to go with the book that was awesome, but the tape player ate it!
