I have a SUPER-DUPER high group of readers this year. Right now 87% of my students have already exceeded the end of the year reading level... Trust me I hear the angels singing :)
I have 2 girls especially who are reading fiction books on a level M... that would be 3rd grade level. Guided reading isn't really what they need anymore so I am meeting their reading needs by using-- chapter books!
I started with this perfect book:
Junie B. Jones Has a Peep in Her Pocket (Junie B. Jones, No. 15)
I love Junie B. books! She is funny and the kids really 'get' her humor. It makes it so that they actually want to read the whole story and work on their reading stamina. I had my girls read 2 chapters at a time over a 1 week period.
Then we'd come together to talk about it. What happened? What part did you like? Was there anything you didn't understand? What do you think will happen next?
I also gave each one a notebook that they used to answer questions based on their 2 chapters. I made sure to target lots of skills: predicting, visualizing, vocabulary, etc.
They have loved this book! One of the little girls even dressed up as Junie B. for our Dr. Seuss Book Character Dress Up Day!
These are some shots of their notebooks:
